Built in 1987
Achna Dam is located in the Ammochostos district, nestled in between Dasaki Achna and Avgorou, it has a capacity of 6.8 million cubic metres, and supplies water for storage and for the red soil villages aka Kokkinochoria, irrigation system during peak periods and emergencies.
The basin of the Achna Dam is involved with the programme “Nature 2000” as a Zone of Special Protection since March 2008.
During September and October Achna Dam is a birdwatcher’s paradise. In particular you can spot an unusually large number of Fish Eagles, who use the wetland as a stop over during their migration trip from North Europe where they breed, on route towards Africa where they hibernate. It’s also very popular for game fishing and has become one of the most popular reservoirs in the Ammochostos district.
Many fish species are caught here, including Mirror and Common Carp, Goldfish, Roach, Tilapia, Sunfish and Large Mouth Bass that can all be found in the dam. You may even catch the rare Monster Catfish lurking in the depths! The Carp in Achna Dam averages between 2 to 4 kg, or 4 to 9 lb in English, and can be a strenuous catch, as they are well known for their strong fighting abilities … so be sure you are physically fit if you are planning a day of catching the infamous Achna Carp!
