Happy New Year !!!
It’s January, and as we’ve always said; Cyprus is versatility to the extreme! You just have to love this place coz in January you can ski in the Troodos mountains in the morning and just over an hour later you can be swimming in the med … Maybe the other way around, then you can get into some Après Ski then chill out in a log cabin, with a lovely open fire, at the top of the mountains and then do it the other way around tomorrow!
Topping up the Tan
I love January, coz it also brings us my fav fruit, Cypriot Oranges are in season, not to mention the new potatoes, Mmm, and the air is still so fresh and clear, you know there’s no heat haze yet, so I’ve started topping up the tan at breakfast out front and this time of the year you can see the northern range of mountains, so vividly, and don’t you just love it when everything is so green. Oh, it also means the summer is getting closer, the days are getting longer and warmer and ho hum, I reckon we’re living in the best climate in the world!
Barbies & Quilts
Also all our seasonal workaholics get a chance to chill a bit, catch up with friends, light a few barbies on lovely fresh sunny days, or gather round an open fire on chilly nights, crack the ice for a Bailey’s and catch up with the years events. As usual, we went from summer to winter in just a few days, and OMG its cold at night, I even had to put the duvet on the bed in December, unheard of!
As I said its skiing season, with The Troodos Mountains covered in snow, probably through ’til March … It’s a totally different Cyprus up there, the real Cyprus, and in the winter it really comes into its element … Ski and board equipment can be hired if you’re into spontaneity?, some of the accommodation is a dream, total tranquillity comes to mind! For more info skicyprus.com … or keep your toes warm on a Jeep Adventure
It’s also rainy season
But hey bring it on!, we need all the rain we can get, and as we only get an average of 35 rainy days rain a year, who cares? … I wonder how long it will be before we are a year round destination. Well fact is, we’re moving in the right direction, expecting visitors to increase by 60% in the next few years, targeting 5 million visitors a year, naturally this can only happen by increasing the number of tourist beds available, which is totally evident and making Cyprus an all year destination, by providing more for our visitors to do!
Of course we’ll need a few more golf courses, sports facilities and training grounds and theatres, at least 2 more new marinas and leisure complexes and boutique hotels with luxury spa’s and, an amusement ride Alton Towers type park, well, you get my drift. This of course will all help increase winter tourism. I know it’s on its way, all you have to do is believe, oh and rely on private enterprise 😉 oh and I’ve got loads of ideas if you’re interested?
I knew it !
I’ve moved here in 1993, having had the time of my life working the ’91 summer season for Power Water Sports, in Protaras, the guys also owned Lumberjacks Pub, so beach all day, pub all night, from April 13th til October 13th a perfect season. My first visit however was in ’87 when I stood in the square in Napa surrounded by Scandies, coz believe it or not they discovered it first … I knew then that this place had a future, and lets just point out Famagusta of course was once the Monaco of the Eastern Med, with 24,000 tourist beds back in 1974, its finally heading back that way with posh marinas getting built in all the major cities along the coast, with some awesome investment opportunities at the new Ayia Napa Marina.
I also love the way Cyprus has become more cultural … helped of course by Paphos hosting The European Capital of Culture back in 2017, and as the younger mayors of each city get voted in. I think Cyprus has finally got the cultural bug and we’ll continue to see an increasing swing towards the modern world and it’s natural and cultural inevitability … click here for a more extensive cultural guide by the C.T.O.
Winter in Cyprus
Now, much as I love the vibe in the summer, I do cherish the peace and quiet on those fresh sunny coastal walks with the dog, those lovely off sea breezes and sea spray, they’re nothing but invigorating … likewise a stroll around one of our many harbours or fishing shelters … oh, and if you think it was party time in the summer, get a’load of winter in Cyprus !
There’s an ever increasing number of restaurants staying open all year to provide traditional Cypriot cuisine and just about every other cuisine you can think of, there’s plenty of bars and I can’t believe how many new stylie cafes serving freshly ground coffee, with lovely open fires and those tall gas heaters, many also providing live entertainment.
Kids & Grown Ups
The Zoo is open in Paphos and The Camel Park in Mazados, near Larnaca, The Cyprus Maze, places like Wow Amusement Park too. Communities like Soul in The Sun and Kendall Events organising soul and reggae parties, and the night clubs, swinging towards the Cypriot market, and more and more summer seasonal workers who decided to stay for the winter, and boy do they know how to party !!!
It’s also shopping season, culminating with the February sales, which are starting earlier every year, I think they started on Boxing Day this year … Ladies, check the stylish Brouska and guys, BrouskaBlue in Paphos, Larnaca and Nicosia or The unisex in style Y2K in Napa and Protaras or London Clothing Company, who have shops all over Cyprus …
Keep an eye open for things like live gigs at Savino Live in Larnaca, Rock Tepee in Limassol, Koursaros Bar in Protaras. The Motocross season dapping its way around Cyprus and the Jet Ski Championships, when pretty much all the local watersports crews fight it out against each other … They’re great days out! might even see you down there?
Did you know, you can pop over to Cyprus, with accommodation and get a tattoo for less money than holidaying at home … check out our tattooists.
We are blessed with one of the longest diving seasons in the world with the temperature of the water never dropping below fifteen degrees and one of the top ten wreck dives in the world and Turtles and occasionally Dolphins and naturally that attracts the best dive instructors that gotta get their underwater fix all year …
