Your Local Butchers
I moved away from the Paralimni area four years ago, but it’s hard to change a good habit of almost 30 years, so I still make the effort to pop in to catch up with Andreas when I’m in the area and sometimes just make the trip to get something special. I’ve always thought that when buying meat, it’s best to buy from a local butcher. I’m not really sure why, but it just seems to make sense and this butcher personifies my theory, the shop is always spotless and the fact that they are usually busy shows that many locals, restaurant owners, and top hotels, agree … in fact, most of my culinary friends tell me he’s the best butcher around and until I find someone as good, I have to agree!
Established as a father and son team, the reputation of Rodolfos Butchers for over 27 years is exemplary. Introducing ‘Vladimir’, 14 years ago, a qualified butcher from Slovakia, and more recently ‘Lefteris’ from Bulgaria, this is truly a European team, providing an excellent, professional butchery and delicatessen service and they’re always ready to serve your favourite cuts or help you select something for that Antipasti platter.
Andreas told me, “We provide the best quality, at the lowest prices possible, and with traditional Cypriot hospitality” .. he continued “we own our own lambing farm, and we personally select chickens from the best local farms and buy our beef live, to ensure the freshest quality and even hand select our pork, hare, and rabbit”.
Burgers & Souvlaki
They also sell homemade Hamburgers and trust me, the homemade Beefburgers are absolutely delicious, and this year they’ve added Lambburgers that are sooo tasty! … so to the Marinated Spare Ribs, plus of course prime cuts of Pork or Lamb Souvlaki, Souvla, and Donner Kebabs. Boasting homemade Soutzoukakia, a blend of pork, onion, garlic, and egg, sealed in breadcrumbs, mmm!
You’ll also find Duck, Goose, Pouson, Pigeon, and various other seasonal Game, and they will pretty much find you anything you’re looking for, if you order in advance, including mouth-watering, fresh Black Angus Beef.
Andreas has an excellent selection of Loukanika, the best homemade Barstoumades I’ve ever tasted, just amazing on the charcoal, so to the homemade Shefftalies and they order their proper sausages from an award-winning local sausage maker, so you’ll find good old English Pork, Beef, and Cumberland Sausages, Scottish Square Sausage, Slovakian Sausage, Mexican Sausage, and recently adding a selection of Bulgarian Sausages and Halal meats … and this year they’re doing ‘Pigs in Blankets!
On the delicatessen counter, you’ll find their very own homemade Organic Virgin Olive Oil, with a fine selection of cheeses, fresh eggs, Quails eggs, plus marinated vine leaves, plain or stuffed aka Dolmades or Koubebia. You’ll also find various pickles, homemade pickled Capers, butter, steak ‘n’ kidney, steak ‘n’ mushroom and chicken & veg pies, cooked hams, gammon, roast beef, beef dripping, pork lard, mustard, Cyprus Honey, and the delectable Thymarizio Thyme Honey from Greece, homemade jams, apple and cranberry sauce, herbs and even pitta bread and natural sea salt.
More Cheese Sir?
Andreas recently added a new refrigerator full of speciality Cheeses from Greece, including Goat and Sheep Milk Cheeses from Crete and of course fresh homemade Halloumi and the best, absolutely delicious Feta Cheese from Crete … oh and, just wait ’til you try their Anthotiros or Graviera mature Cheeses from Crete, perfect for pasta btw, and if you like yogurt, you’re in for a treat coz mum Panagiota makes it by hand, just for you!
There’s a lovely wine fridge, chilled to perfection, with a selection of white, red, and rose wines by Nikolettino Wines and a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Ayios Philippos Winery for only €6, to give you something to do while the hubby lights the charcoal, which they also stock outside, is there a better way to cook meat?
Meeting demands from the local market you will also find Russian Snacks, including Belmenoi, it’s similar to Ravioli, plus Bulgarian favourites; Beef Quarters, Beef Stomach, and Tongue and Lights.
They’ll ask you how you’d like your meat, tidied, trimmed, and cut, always doing that first before they weigh it and once you get to know these guys, you just say things like ‘extra fine ground beef for Bolognese, for four people and they know how much to give you, but bear in mind they’re Cypriot portions 😉 … another thing I love here, is before I buy for a BBQ, I often run through an order for how many people are coming and Andreas says when he thinks that’s enough … brilliant!
Naturally, Andreas and the crew are always extra busy, especially at seasonal calender events like Easter, and Christmas, so to make sure you don’t miss out on your turkey or favourite cuts, pop in and put your order in advance!
