January 2018
Winter also gives all our seasonal workaholics the chance to chill a bit, catch up with friends, light a few barbies on lovely fresh sunny days, or gather round an open fire on chilly nights, crack the ice for a Bailey’s and catch up with the years events. As usual, we went from summer to winter in just a few days, omg ! it's cold at night, I even had to put the duvet on in December, unheard of !

Assumption Day, 15th August
The 15th August is in fact Assumption Day, the day Mary, mother of Christ, was taken up to heaven, body and soul, so she could be with her son Jesus forever ... it's preceded by 14 days of fasting, and of course all the churches in full flow! The Festival of The Flood, aka Kataklysmos
one of the most popular customs and arguably the most fun is a joyful procession to the sea, where people sprinkle and often throw water over each other, symbolising the purification of the body as well as the soul ... Hmm, I’m taking a bucket with me !
The Lingo – Basic Course
We thought you might appreciate a quick crash course in the basics of the local lingo, which is a sort of slang Greek, aka ‘Horthkatika’ which is basically a village Greek. Most of the locals speak English but they love it if you make an effort to speak their language. I do it in English phonetics so just read in English … Simples! … oh and don’t take it too seriously …
