Unique in Cyprus
I was recently very comforted to find such an extraordinary piece of diagnostic equipment at the Ikesios MRI Centre in the Paralimni area of Ammohostos. This Siemens Magnetom Espree 1.5 T MRI Machine, is the very best in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is trusted all over the world and is unique in Cyprus. It’s also the 1st Open Bowl MRI in the Paralimni area with the biggest capacity in Cyprus, with a scan length of only 125cm and an internal diameter of 70 cm, allowing about 60% Head Out examinations, and accommodating a person up to 200 kg in weight, which eliminates any claustrophobic feeling.
Diagnostic
I caught up with owner Lefteris to find out more; he explained “MRI allows us to conduct a diagnostic medical examination, performed using magnetic resonance imaging”. This examination is generally used to determine the extent of, in my case, cancer spread if any, but is often used to determine the extent of many health issues including injury and it allows the doctors to recommend the following steps and if need be surgery”.
Dizzy Spells
To explain; a few months ago following some concerns over my health, I had a CT Scan and I was more than disappointed to learn that I had cancer in my left kidney, much as it was a bit of a shock, I realised from my first meeting with Dr. Koumis at The Polyclinic Lito, that I’d probably have to remove that kidney.
Tests
I was however eternally grateful that the irrefutable health service in Cyuprus wouldn’t leave a stone unturned, so I was recommended from one doctor to another to run further tests to be sure that cancer had not spread anywhere else … Several blood tests, urine tests, measurements, trips to Appolonion Private Hospital in Nicosia for a biopsy and finally my MRI Tests at Ikesios in Paralimni, I had my kidney removed by the eminent Dr. Prodromos Phillipou on 21st December 2022. There followed even more tests, something I’ll have to get used to I suppose.
After Care
Following the removal of the kidney, on the recommendation of my doctor, last Friday, I spent almost three hours in the reassuring company of the wonderful and extremely efficient Lydia and George, at the MRI Centre in Paralimni on the MRI Machine again. This time the task in hand was three separate scans, one on my brain, one on my chest, and one on my stomach, to be absolutely certain there was no spread of cancer.
Contrast
In my case, they also had to administer ‘contrast’, a purple colouring into the blood system, which is the best money can buy, and was administered by fully trained nursing staff with specialised knowledge. The results fortunately were ‘all clear’ and they are provided on a CD accompanied by a printed and handwritten report to show your doctor, and he confirms the results.
Warm Welcome
Always greeted with a friendly smile by Orthodoxia and Andriana in reception, the centre has 4 fully qualified Radiologists using one or more of 12 Coils for various parts of the body, often using 4, and sometimes all 12 … The 12 are specific for each test, namely; Brain, Neck, Full Spinal, Breast, Abdomen, Pelvis, Hips, Knee, Ankle & Foot, Hands & Wrist, Elbow, Tibula, Fibila, and for many footballers the Thigh Coil. They are in fact the first Diagnostic centre to be able to offer a Full Body Fusion MRI.
GESY
Naturally, you can visit the centre privately, but I recommend you ask your doctor to refer you as they are also contracted to GESY, the Cyprus equivalent of The National Health Service. They also regularly accept patients referred by Health Insurance companies, from Cyprus and internationally. Lefteris mentioned they have a specialist that comes from Nicosia twice a month to conduct Ultra Sound checkups for our local patients.
Knowledge
I asked Lefteries to tell me more, he said, “The team are in regular cooperation with many top distinguished diagnostic centres all over Europe consistently exchanging information and results to help better our service, and we have regular visits from patients from Isreal, the UK and in fact, all of Europe, not to mention many tourists whilst on their holidays”
Community
Owner of the Centre ‘Leteries’ and the crew take an active part in social events and promote volunteerism regularly supporting sports, and sponsoring football clubs, and events in the Ammochostos region.
