Another Level
I met Daniela at The Cyprus Bar Show in Kapparis, and when I found out she had recently bought one of my favourite eateries ‘Cinnamon Lounge Bar’ at the 100+-year-old Mansion aka Shongas Inn, in the heart of Dherynia village, I just had to find out more. So we arranged a meeting and over a delicious coffee I was more than pleasantly surprised, this lady is on another level …
Decor
I reminisced with Daniela about when my good friends George and George originally opened back in 2017, two unique destinations that offer visitors a taste of local culture, cuisine, and Cypriot hospitality. I was so impressed with George Zomanis’ minimalistic interior design ability, which I was familiar with, as he worked as one of our graphics designers back in the 90’s … I love the traditional high ceilings, oak beams, thatching, cool discreet lighting, and comfy seating, and sofas. Daniela has added a ladies’ touch and the place looks even cooler.
The Culture
Cinnamon Lounge Bar is a restaurant and bar that has become known for its delicious food, warm atmosphere, and live entertainment, popular for locals and tourists alike. The restaurant’s menu features seasonal dishes inspired by Daniela’s travels and international upbringing … all made with fresh local ingredients and cooked to perfection.
Topical
As I tucked into an eclectic selection of Mini Quiche, a seasonal salad, and a Jamaican Johhny Cake, Daniela informed me “I couldn’t find any spinach so I used nettles I grow in my garden”, brilliant! … I asked her how it all happened, and a familiar story; Daniela said, “I came over for a two-week holiday, met the two Georges, and thought ‘Why not?” I asked where she had cheff’d before? I was amazed when Daniela said ‘she hadn’t, you’d never have known when you see the creations on her menu. I wanted to know more …
The Menu
Daniela said; “I’ll keep the menu small, and simplistic and change it every week, geared towards seasonal dishes using fresh Cypriot ingredients but with an international twist” … “In the summer we’ll look at how to make the most out of Deryneia’s famous Strawberries, Watermelons, for example, and of course using local Cyprus potatoes” … I think she meant a ‘Daniela twist’, this lady is extraordinary.
Looking Ahead
Daniela told me about the upcoming winter, “and so in the winter, we’ll be cooking things like Kolokasi, aka Jerusalem Potato, and Whipped Fetta with Roasted Carrots”, to mention but a few … Daniela let me into a few recipes but I’m sworn to secrecy!
International
Daniela continued; “The locals and the ex-pat community just love our Platters; depending on the season, we include Anari, Koullouri, ham, salami, cheeses, pineapple, strawberries, and crackers but we’ll also have things like Jerk Chicken, served with rice and peas and spiced carrots, or maybe a German dish or two to mention but a few.
Afters
Depending on the season they’ll be handmaking some special desserts, again simplistic, but with a twist .. you really must try Daniela’s Deep fried Johnny Cakes, savory or sweet, just wait ’til you taste them topped with ice cream and maple syrup.
Behind the Bar
Serving a wide selection of drinks, including local wines, a few bottled beers, and specialing in a cocktail list of about 50 different mixes and blends with 12 classics and 12 Signature Cocktails my fav has to be the Dark & Stormy; rum, lime, and ginger beer … Mmm!
Theme Nights
The night I was there to interview Daniela they had a Reggae Night on, and there’s plans to add monthly Latin Nights with dancers, Burlesque Evenings, 70’s & 80’s Nights, and Rock nights, and the occasional Craft Fayre .. stay tuned!
Rooms to Let
Daniela also runs Shongas Inn next door, a traditional Cypriot guesthouse situated just a short distance from Deryneia’s town center. The inn is a carefully renovated 19th-century building that has been restored to preserve its original charm and character.
Tranquil Setting
The 6 rooms are decorated traditionally, with king-size beds, ensuite bathrooms handcrafted furniture, and local artwork. Guests can enjoy a peaceful stay in a tranquil setting, surrounded by lush greenery in their beautiful gardens.
Rooms for Hire
What a lovely place to hold a Yoga Retreat, you can take all 6 rooms and the courtyard during the day … the Inn is often used for weddings and engagements, as a base for the bride to get ready, with all her ladies in waiting … Perfect!
Take it All
In fact; both The Cinnamon Lounge Bar and Shongas Inn can be hired out in part or as a whole … So if you really want to hold a big special event, birthday, anniversary, or any special occasion and get-togethers, give Daniela a call …
