It was the name that first caught my attention, brilliant I thought! … Then, this wonderful idea, equally brilliant!, a Boardgaming Cafe, nestled in the vibrant city of Larnaca, and I just had to get together with David, owner of ‘Shakes and Lattes’ to find out more …
The Tasting
It was coffee-tasting day, as David, coming outta Souff London, wanted to test the different coffees available and when I asked David to explain, I have to say I found out stuff I had no idea about coffee. Things like, how much time to roast it, how tight to pack the coffee, the temperature of the water, and how much milk froth to add, and I just have to say, these guys have got it spot on!!!
Cafe Culture
Over a delicious cappuccino; I asked David how it happened? He said; “We moved here 8 years ago, into house renovations, and traveling around Cyprus, I noticed the lack of attention to detail when it came to coffee. Barristers, roasting the shit out of the coffee, and the Cypriot cafe culture was people sat around a table, not talking, glued to their phones, no integration”.
The Idea
He continued; “I also noticed there was nowhere serving the International variations of Teas and Coffees, served hot or cold, like a cafe I’d visited in South London called ‘Ludoquist’ and thought this could work in Cyprus”.
The Menu
At Shakes & Lattes Cafe the menu is a carefully crafted blend of classic and innovative offerings. Coffee aficionados can indulge in a wide range of specialty brews, from rich espressos to velvety cappuccinos. A single-origin coffee, from the Carmo Estates near the town of Heliodora, a southern state of Minas Gerais whose mission is to produce exceptional coffee and provide their employees with a good quality of life while at the same time ensuring environmental sustainability.
Cold Brew
Shakes and Lattes also offer a cold brew coffee, aka The Whiskey of Coffee’ brewed for 16 hours with a real chocolaty taste sourced from a single origin in Guatemala. All of Shakes and Latte’s coffees are roasted right here in Larnaca by Artisan Roaster, Paul’s Coffee Roasters.
International
Here you can enjoy recipes from Japan, Korea, Australia, and Spain, and the skilled baristas take pride in their artistry, ensuring that each cup is a masterpiece. Whether you prefer a traditional latte or a creative concoction like a caramel macchiato with a hint of cinnamon, you are sure to find a delightful brew that satisfies your taste buds.
Shaken not Stirred
But it’s not just the coffee that steals the show at Shakes & Lattes Cafe. Their menu also boasts an array of Milkshakes and Smoothies, plus delectable treats and light bites that perfectly complement the beverage selection … and for something a little more cosmopolitan try their Boba Tea from Japan.
Nibbles
David and his Cypriot wife Maria, haven’t finalised the snacks menu yet, but it’ll probably include freshly baked pastries and croissants, mouthwatering sandwiches, and salads, and cold platters, something to please every palate. The cafe will also offer a selection of vegan and gluten-free options, catering to a diverse range of dietary preferences.
