In Cyprus, Tsiknopempti is more than just a culinary celebration, it’s a social and cultural event. Many towns organize public barbecues, music, and dancing, creating a carnival-like atmosphere. Schools, offices, and even municipalities often take part in the festivities, with employees setting up grills and enjoying a communal meal.
Carnivals Coming
This tradition is part of Apokries, the Greek Carnival season, which leads up to Clean Monday aka Kathara Deftera, the first day of Lent. It represents one last indulgence before the 40-day fasting period, during which many Orthodox Christians abstain from meat and dairy.
