I remember when Pet Galaxy moved into their new and larger premises, a little closer to their mother company, Tasos & Maria Kefalas Veterinary Clinic, mainly because they wanted to increase their selection of pet foods and accessories, and more importantly, to add new ones, including more economical quality foods, and a dedicated pet grooming service.
New Era
The latest member to join this ever-growing team as the company’s resident groomer is Maria Modestou, so I booked Bandit in for a shampoo and trim so that I could have a quick chat … I asked Maria how she got into pet grooming. She said, “I was born and raised in Xylophagou and grew up with lots of dogs in the family. I love dogs, and decided to learn how to groom them properly to start my own business” …
Time to Learn
I asked where she studied for a qualification. Maria said, “I trained at ‘Georgia’s Grooming Academy’ in Larnaca. She is very good friends with Tassos, and then Tassos offered me the opportunity to launch my grooming salon here”.
How Many Breeds?
I asked, How do you learn to groom so many different types of dogs? … She said, “whilst training I learnt to cut Alabai, Kankals, German Shepherds, Spaniels, Pointers, Retrievers, Jack Russles, Pomeranian Minis, and Pomeranian Mixes, to mention but a few”. … Maria continued, “You learn about skin allergies, all the different shampoos and conditioners, creams and of course how to trim or shave them, as some dogs can’t be shaved and so we have 12 different pairs of scizzors that are required to cut the different parts of their coat” … Twelve? That’s amazing!
It Takes Two
Maria’s hubby, Chrisostomos, is always there to help, especially with the bigger dogs, and as I wanted to get a few photos of the process with Bandit, I knew he might need to be held. I asked what’s the process?, Maria responded, “We comb and wash our dogs with professional, natural, allergy-free shampoo and conditioner, then thoroughly rinse them in these specialised sinks with steps up to make it easier to get the bigger dogs in” … I have to say, she was awesome, calming Bandit here! Just the positions I noticed they held him in, you could tell they’ve done this before.
Hot or Cold
Then it’s over to the drying station, which lowers down to the ground and hydraulically lifts the dog into a drying height, where Maria pointed out the two different dryers that are required for the different types of short or long-haired dogs. Luckily, Bandit is ok with hair dryers at home, so Maria and Chrisostomos dried him easily and to perfection. I asked what it’s like when you get a husky in? She said, “It just takes a little bit longer”. Then I asked if she could give Bandit a little trim, as I was advised not to cut an English Springer Spaniel’s hair, and she agreed …
Amazed
I was fascinated by all the things you need to know to be a groomer, and the time that it takes to do the job properly, and I thought for the price it was absolutely excellent value for money. And let’s face it, we have to spoil our pups occasionally … I just had to ask Maria, Do you have a favourite? She said not really; of course, the Cyprus Poodle, but if I had to choose one, it would be a Pomeranian Teddy Bear breed. I love the intricacy of the styling!

My Pet Groomers also offer a collection and delivery service within the Ammochostos area, providing many different sizes of carrier boxes and cages, so your pet will feel comfortable and safe. Her first language is Cypriot, but she speaks a little English too.

As if their service isn’t already good enough, Maria also offers discounts for dog owners who bring their dogs regularly, mentioning that some clients come once a month, and of course, if you have more than one dog, so give her a call if you want to check first.

My Pet Grooming is at Pet Galaxy Pet Store, a sister company to Tasos & Maria Kefalas Vets, and, to be honest, is more of a pet store than a pet shop, as they rarely have pets for sale. However, the wonderful Carita can give you professional and expert advice and assistance with almost any pet you’re looking for, including dogs, cats, and reptiles, with a small selection of Live Fish, Birds, and Rodents available in the store. They naturally stock many top of the range pet foods.
Accessories
They also have an extensive range of Toys and Accessories, including beds, kennels, homes, cages, baskets, carriers, collars, leads, training equipment, and toys, and there’s always a new seasonal collection of clothing. Of course, you’ll also get good advice and recommendations on anti-flea and Tic sprays, drops, collars, and shampoos, and they’ll message you when it’s time to apply … oh, and I love the slow feeders and collapsible travel bowls … just brilliant!
