Inside Out Alex Skoullou
To be honest, I wouldn’t be anywhere without this guy! It was in fact Alex who told me I was doing it all wrong back in 2016 and helped me create this website, initially to drive a responsive dynamic App. Believe it or not, it took us 2 years! … I finally managed to get him to sit down for an Inside-Out style interview
Early Days
To explain; Alex first joined us at What’s On! back in the winter of 1999. Originally, as one of our design team, one of his first contributions was the cover of our magazine for the Millennium issue, January 2000. Alex’s design brain was alternative, to say the least, and his Corel Draw and Photoshop skills, on another level … my kind of guy!
The Early Days
Iranian-born, Alex’s parents moved to Cyprus in 1979. After their split, his mum moved to Chicago, Illinois, and then in ’92 to Canada, growing up in Canada, he calls himself a ‘Canadian Cypriot’. I asked how he got into graphics and computers? Alex said; “In the 90’s I decided to do some travelling; I visited many places in South America and then following my passion for Japanese culture, onto Japan, and I did any type of work I could find.
The Movies
Alex continued; “I then got a job, working as a Graphics Designer within the film industry including Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox and TriStar designing stuff like promotional posters and marketing. And more recently, from 2012 to 2014, as International Customer Support for Canon”. Then, Alex told me; he moved back to Cyprus and worked down at Sling Shot which is where I first met him, designing absolutely awesome posters, so clever is his mind you can see them in our gallery below … and then my life changed when he joined us at What’s On!
IT Services
Alex Continued; “These days I specialise in IT Services, Network Infrastructure, Public Wifi and Corporate Wifi, recently setting up the infrastructure at the Cavo Maris Beach Hotel. The request by the hotel was ‘that the hotel’s clients could access wifi in every room, all the offices, and to each corner of the grounds all the way down to the beach’. This included the running of Wifi cabling, telephony, and computer networks. In addition, I had to set up the Security Camera System and Door Lock Entry system”.
Close & Personal
Tbh, Alex, isn’t just my IT Technician, he has become a personal friend to the extent I don’t have to tell him what I want, he just knows, he’s set up my PC workstation, uploaded everything I need and even provides my web hosting, which btw is about a 82GB Site, that’s run completely problem free for years. He has also provided me with regular updates and recently installed my NAS System that makes my computer at home accessible from my phone, anywhere in the world, but more importantly, backs up my 3TB folder called What’s On Cyprus, putting my mind at rest, and more so as he says, ‘his too’.
Consultancy
Anything ‘Apple’ mad, I regard Alex as one of the top IT Technicians I’ve ever met in Cyprus. His experience is unquestionable to the extent that when I introduce him to friends I warn them sometimes he comes over as being a bit arrogant, but it’s just coz he knows his business inside out and as I said earlier ‘I owe much of my success with What’s On Cyprus down to this guy’.
Foundations
I asked Alex, how things have changed since we met over 25 years ago … Alex said; “I’m now offering my experience as a technology consultant, discussing the requirements of the client for IT with the construction company before the building gets built, so that they can run the required cables for the infrastructure required for that business.
Tried & Trusted
Alex’s reputation spread very quickly, his service to his clients impeccable, nothing was too much for him and in the old days I could call him with an emergency at silly ‘o clock when we were closing the mag for publishing and sure enough he’d sort the problem. These days he can, as often as not, do that with ‘Easy Screen’ without leaving his home. His clients include; Pittadjis Law Firm, Panikos Orphanides Steel Construction, Fame Kitchens, Super Action, Mintis Solicitors, Force Cars, Pittakis Building Materials, Pipakis Aluminium, and of course where it all started over 20 years ago What’s On Cyprus, to mention but a few!
Sales & Service
Naturally, Alex also provides an excellent sales and service facility, he knows where to get the best quality parts, accessories and hardware equipment at the lowest possible prices … so if you’ve got iPhone problems, laptop problems, or need a faster, cleaner internet system, add a couple of screens, I’ve got 3, or you just need some good solid advice, this guy comes highly recommended …
The Little Things
It’s not just his IT skills that matter, Alex also helps me with many other things, his passion is the movies and movie scores, so he knows all about them and we often download and watch a movie together. His knowledge of electric cars is tops too … and finally, if you like Home Automation at its best, from a single security camera to keep an eye on the cat, to a complete business infrastructure give him a call …
