Greek Independence Day, 25th March

Greek Independence Day
Celebrated every year on 25th March, it’s one of the most important national holidays in Greece and Cyprus.  The day commemorates the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, when Greeks rose up against the rule of the Ottoman Empire after nearly 400 years of occupation.

Fight For Freedom
The revolution officially began on 25 March 1821, a date that also coincides with the Greek Orthodox celebration of the Annunciation.  According to tradition, Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the revolutionary flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra, calling the Greeks to fight for freedom.  Although historians debate some details of this event, the date remains a powerful national symbol.

Nine Years
The War of Independence lasted until 1830, when Greece was officially recognised as an independent state by the Great Powers of Europe.  Heroes of the revolution, such as Theodoros Kolokotronis and Laskarina Bouboulina, are honoured for their bravery and leadership during this struggle.

Parades Everywhere
Today, Greek Independence Day is celebrated with military parades, school performances, church services, and patriotic events across Greece and Cyprus and around the world.  The largest parade takes place in Athens, Nicosia, and Limassol, where citizens gather to wave Greek flags and remember the sacrifices made for their freedom.

Nation Pride
Greek Independence Day is not only a remembrance of the past but also a celebration of national pride, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Greek people.  It’s a national Bank Holiday, or another good reason to light the BBQ …

It’s Great to be Greek!
