Elena called me recently to do a catch up about the current Covid-19 crises and the good news is they are opening on Wednesday 27th May, with the upmost care, following health and hygiene protocols … all be it they’re opening nice and slowly, so there is a chance they won’t have everything on the menu, but we agreed there’s better times ahead, and it’ll be back to, as normal as it ever gets at Sirena Bay, after all this place is pure chill out … Elena also said it’ll be best to reserve a table as they will be fewer than usual, and spaciously set …
It was way back in 1971 that local Artist Irini and husband decided to build a little beach shack, high up on the rocks of Sirena Bay, mainly to get away from the maddening crowds of Famagusta, btw that shack is now the food bar … Then through the 80’s and 90’s the rest of this magnificent villa was completed and so, this extraordinary venue was born! and in fact, its definitely one of my favourite places in the world …
Under the trees
Once our little hidden secret retreat from the heat, much because it’s a little paradise, Irini’s daughter Elena, a very close friend for many years and an extraordinary lady I must say, has moved with the times, launching an alternative concept, it’s a bit Greek contemporary, leaning more towards a cosmopolitan Cypriot home at party time, favoured by the older crew, complementing the stunning location with spectacular views, easily described as my little heaven on a bay.
2 New Beaches
I love the crazy paved terrace, shaded by tall mature trees, that twinkle delightfully as the sun sets, the crazy colourful tables and chairs, almost kindergarden’ish, little alcoves of comfy seating, hammocks set up high in the trees, whilst down a tier, skirting the rocks, a pathway leading to the almost private beach on the left, that’ll have mellow music and waiter service and there’s sunbeds, spaciously set, all with a view to die for, the sea of serenity at Sirena Bay …
Yiannis is the new Mixologist, who’ll blend you a speciality cocktail, like a tantalizing Mojito, and they really are delicious, I love the Bubble Gum Mojito, served in a cool jug … I once watched the barman make a Flaming Lamborgini, Yiannis said “wait til you see mine” … Naturally, you’ll find your fav tipple from an extensive range of branded spirits, including an excellent choice of whiskeys, premium Gins along with flavoured tonics … oh and Yiannis will be introducing a few signature cocktails based on white spirits and he’s invited me for the tasting … how could I refuse?
You must check out their new beach bar open on special events days … Oh, btw, you can use my favourite sunbed if I’m not there … 😉
The wines are carefully selected, many to compliment their unique cuisine … so to the beers of which they serve 7 on draught including San Miguel, ice-cold Apple flavour Somersby Cider and Barcelona.
On the Menu
They’ve stepped it up in the kitchen and head chef Andreas Kousalis has become very creative with a sort of Bohemian Traditional Fusion. You’ll find culinary delights like classic Cypriot cuisine with bigger portions, maybe you fancy something to share, I love the Ouzo Platters! |
You’ll even be able to order something very special in advance, all you have to do is ask … but if you don’t, I have to say the whole Kalamari is delicious and my absolute favourite has to be the Octopus, cooked with a unique recipe that head chef wouldn’t even tell me, but anyway, it’s just to die for! Oh, and Andreas told me he’s looking forward to add a few things to the menu, the New Orleans Hangover Sandwich sounds delicious, conjured up with ham, cheese, mortadella, salami, green olives, salad and lots of homemade olive oil served in a huge roll to serve 4 people …
They love their seafood, the Fresh Green Mussels and Pasta delightfully teased with fresh lemon zest and fresh basil both picked from their orchard … much the same as the Thyme used to compliment the Fresh Roasted Salmon … Not forgetting the meat-eaters who can now enjoy a massive 500g Pork Chop slowly cooked over real charcoal … Mmm!
I always like to find out what the owners favourite is and of course, the seafood was, but Elena said the Falafel with Kouskos was amazing, it’s everyone’s fav, and quick as a flash, head chef Andreas brought me and Zilli a platter to share with the girls, along with warm pitta bread and a lovely Cypriot salad with feta, sprinkled with lemon and lots of homemade olive oil from their own olive trees …
Elena told me she has planned the whole seasons calendar, so, subject to various regulations and maximum numbers, as always they’ll have regular events … from Naughty Rembetika Nights, Top international DJ’s, Live Greek Jazz, Friday Night Retro Sessions, Saturday afternoon Live Radio links, to pure Sunday Chillout Sessions and the occasional Live Bands, some with a cultural twist, tbh these days, at Sirena Bay, you should expect the unexpected! … oh, and I said anything can happen, so for versatility to the extreme, check out Elena tangoing the afternoon away!
It’s a family thing in the week, locals and tourists a’many, some returning for their thirty-something year, but tbh, it tends to get a tad crazy down here at weekends, as they get joined by the cosmopolitan Nicosia crew who swarm to the coast and because it’s so special, occasionally the rich and famous who come down to indulge in a little bit of paradise and recharge their system, I think I even spotted John Malkovich down there once 😉 … This place really is pure chill out!!!
Weddings & Events
It’s an absolutely awesome venue, unique is an understatement, just perfect for your wedding reception, christening, birthday party, anniversary or divorce and naturally, they welcome inquiries for private parties, small weddings, and of course corporate events, with catering from their a’la carte menu … btw, there may be a limit on the number of guests so please call them for a chat …
Elena did mention that to avoid disappointment it’s advisable to book a table as tables will be set with social distancing in mind and a maximum of ten people per table … check out their facebook videos here …
