Sonny’s
On the main Paphos to Coral Bay Road, right on the fork to Kissonerga, pun intended, overlooking Potima Beach, aka Banana Bay, and one of my favourite views in Paphos, is this delightful eatery; Sonny’s looks good the moment you arrive and then it just gets better! oh and, btw, these guys really know how to cook!!! …
Experience
Coming outta Shepherds Bush in London, Chris with over 30 years experience and catering in his blood, followed his father’s footsteps and in 2012 he finally sealed the deal to buy the old Banana Cabaret Bar in Kissonerga, better known for its sauciness than its sauces 😉 He named it ‘Sonny’s, after his son, so I suppose it was inevitable Sonny would join his dad sooner or later, together they make an unbeatable team! … And tbh, you’ll probably need to book to make sure you find a table!
Inside
It looks lovely as you arrive, through the stone pillars, is a spacious restaurant with rustic décor, solid wooden tables and chairs, a log burner at each end for those chilly winter evenings and a delightful covered terrace running along two sides and etched with crimson flowers, overlooking Banana Bay, just a perfect way to enjoy lunch or a romantic sunset dinner! … Check out my recent Live Video around the place.
The Menu
Truly International, but with a traditional English twist, Chris and Sonny have created a menu from a selection of their favourites, including some recipes that have been passed down from his Yia Yia. So, let’s start with the steaks, tender Black Angus Rib Eye and Sirloin and just wait ’til you try the Prime Australian Fillet, cooked perfectly to your taste and served with an amazing selection of sauces to make those taste buds explode.
Brunch & Lunch
It’s a wonderful choice if you just fancy a nice coffee and a slice of Cheese on Toast, some Scrambled Eggs on toast or one of my favourites just has to be either the Steak Bruschetta or the Smoked Salmon & Scrambled Eggs on Toast … oh, and the eggs are Free-range btw! Mmm!
Variety
Choose just a salad, much as I shouldn’t say ‘just’ … or Fish & Chips or one of their famous Platters for two or more. Everything is freshly cooked using very local produce. In fact, even the sea salt is hand-harvested from the Akamas Nature Reserve. The homemade pies are awesome, especially the Chicken, Gammon and Leek, a compliment to the best potatoes in the world. The Pork fillet in mushroom and garlic sauce is exemplary and hard to resist.
Starters
I always start with one of their Premium Gins then, I’ve never tasted Chicken Liver Pate like Chris serves, with fresh rocket salad and toasted mini baguettes, but the Troodos Smoked Trout Fillet on the top of the list of starters is up there for a very good reason and I’ll let you into a little secret, many locals go there just for their Sardine Fillets …
Veggie Heaven
Even the choice for their vegetarian clients is really cool … Sonny’s Spinach & Halloumi Curry, so tempting, and I must say quite unique, but the Spicy Three Bean Burger, I’m told is unbeatable, must try that one on my next visit.
Specialities
Well, I think pretty much everything on the menu is special, but the Rack of Ribs, are finger-licking good, but my absolute favourite has to be their pies. Chris is a master at making Suet, using one of his granny’s recipes, so if you fancy a perfectly steamed pie, look no further, omg!!!
Banana Bay Prawns
This has to be another of my absolute favourites and I must say quite unique, a delicious creation of grilled prawns, wrapped in banana leaves and then slow-cooked until they just melt in your mouth … seriously, they really are a must try!
Daily Specials
There’s always something different on the menu, with daily specials and seasonal favourites. Just check the blackboards on the way in … oh, and I often pop in just for a soup of the day, coz this guy cooks an awesome broth! … if you’re lucky he’s cooking asparagus soup, probably the best I’ve ever tasted!
Seafood
Naturally being on the coast you’ll find a fabulous selection of seafood, but Sonny prefers to get seafood orders the day before to be absolutely sure he serves it as fresh as today’s catch, so give him a call today and choose your Seafood Platter for tomorrow … OMG!!!
Sundays
The boys cook a wicked Sunday Lunch with one of three starters, Vegetable Spring Rolls, or Stuffed Mushrooms, but mine’s the Chicken Liver Pate, followed by Traditional Slow Roast Roast Beef, Lamb or Pork served with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and a selection of steamed vegetables … for only €13.95 for two courses!
Afters
Ha!, those were the old days … hmm ;), now you’ll find their naughtiness in the wonderful desserts, all homemade. The Lemon Cheesecake, tingling with citrus, the Bailey’s Crème Brûlée, it’s soooo Moorish, maybe the Treacle Sponge and custard mmm! and if there’s still room, you must try just a small slice of their world-famous Chocolate Cake with a delicious Pizarro Coffee and a complimentary aperitif.
