The End of an era …
Sadly, when the long established Secrets Freedom Club in Larnaca announced it was closing down, I thought wow!, that’s the end of an awesome era, the one that helped revolutionise freedom clubbing in Cyprus! … btw, the end of an era normally brings a new beginning!
The early days
I met this awesome couple Nick and Bill back in 1994 when they first opened down on Dhekelia Road near the bases. Times were different then in Cyprus, the gay movement a little taboo … Moving to the airport road in 2005, by then it was more of a freedom club than a gay club, welcoming absolutely everyone, as long as you’re a little open-minded, of course 😉 … and the mix of clubbers was broad, to say the least, so much so, it was just one big anything goes party … every weekend !!!
Determined
I once asked Nick why he opened the club?, he said, “It was NYE, and we didn’t know where to go, so we opened a place to go” … In those early days, they battled with laws and sexual prejudice, and took them to court, and won, and after 25 years, and the sad passing of Nick’s partner Bill, Nick has decided to take a backstage role, so the club is still running, with Emilios now in charge, a new era has begun, changing the name to The Night Elements Club, and btw it’s still the only true Freedom Club in Cyprus!!!
Swinging
Inside was an array of comfy seating, garden swings, sofas, cubby holes, and curtains … It was disco style with a touch of class, probably stemming from Nicks early fashion designer days, well-stocked bars everywhere, and a chill out beer garden out back with pool tables and all … naturally, the clientele an international mix from all over the world … btw, Emilios tells me “that won’t change” 😉
Cool Vibes
The atmosphere here was unique, to say the least! Every weekend there was drag shows, strip shows, singers, entertainers, and go-go boys and loads more, often introducing new and young stars to the stage … plus international guest DJ’s, from Europe all the way to Oz, spinning a music mix of UK and Greek Mainstream blended with a little R’n’B, House, and Deep House … oh, and this lot really know how to party!
Behind the bar
It’s all imported spirits, international wines and bubbles, beers on draught, and the sexiest cocktails this side of Mykonos … My faves were the Suck, Bang & Blow, Bottoms Up, Cupids Arrow, Bend Over and The Deep Throat, a blend of White Rum, Malibu, Lime & Pineapple juice and cream of course 😉 … oh and by the way with long drinks at only € 5 and regular special offers, like free entrance and 5 drinks for only € 20, it was probably the least costing club night out in Cyprus!
Parties & Events
I loved the warm welcome they gave you if you held your wedding reception, birthday party or any excuse party …. adding balloons, free bubbles, and all the trimmings and catering was arranged for you … all you had to do was take the cake! oh, and btw, there was no dress code here so you could go as you please!
Sadly we say goodbye
As one door closes and another one opens, so we said goodbye to Secrets Freedom Club and a big hearty good luck to The Night Elements Club & Bar … I knew that this can’t be the end … much as this idea didn’t last … Stay tuned!

The Pheonix Rises from the Ashes … Nick is reopening New Secrets once a month … and the first New Secrets is on Saturday, 8th June 2019 at Stage Live, which is at Filios Tsigaridis, Larnaca … and I’m going!!!
