East Coast Golf
If you’re a golfer and you live or are staying on the east, or south-east coast, then travelling all the way to Limassol and Paphos for a round is crazy, especially when there’s an excellent course right on your doorstep in Dhekelia, it’s 18 holes, over 6,500 metres, sweeping valleys, mature trees, panoramic views over Larnaca bay, playing to a Par 70 and you don’t have to be in the services to play there, oh and just in case you didn’t know, it’s one of the most challenging courses in Europe!

I played there a few years ago and was happy to be invited by the club manager, John McLoaghlin, to find out what’s on at the club these days … John told me that many people think this course is just for people in the forces, but in fact they welcome local residents, both Cypriot and British and in fact any nationality, and even have a couple of members happy to give you lessons, namely Morgan John and Tony Laslett, who obviously knows this course well, as he’s the head groundsman.
The Course
The course is well managed, self-funded and very well maintained, and tbh, suits mid to high handicap players … originally carved out by Major Franks RE and his engineers back in 1964 … It’s 18 holes, split by a gated road, 11 holes one side and 7 the other, with artificial grass greens … totalling 6,500 yards, there’s 4 x Par 3’s, 12 x Par 4’s and 2 x Par 5’s … and a course total of Par 70 … with the course record an excellent 66 by ex-pro Tony Lassia
Challenging
The first hole, aka ‘Barlow Heights’, is an easy 172 yards, but hole 2, Plateau is a 404 yard up a slope, Par 5 that’ll test you from the start, and btw, get ready for a hard slog down hill for the last 9 holes with hole 15 ‘McGill Hill’, the second of the par 5’s over 402 yards that’ll pull out the best in you!
Fixtures & Competitions
As an affiliated club with The Cyprus Golf Federation, naturally, you’ll find regular, team fixtures, and club and inter-club competitions most weekends, for men, women, and these days mixed medals and competitions with no minimum age …
Sponsored Competitions
Many of their competitions are sponsored with cash and gift prizes .. one of the highlights of the year is The Cambridge Weight Plan Stableford Open for golfers with talent with €1,500 Cash prizes … and the big one on 9th & 10th May; ‘Festival of Golf’ and on Tuesday 12th Mandells Cars Seniors Open for anyone over 50 …
Practice
There’s a practice putting green, driving nets, and they are currently preparing a practice bunker, and chipping area, all just a short walk from the clubhouse, aka the 19th hole, of course …
Shop
Morgan John runs the club shop, where you’ll find a cool selection of golf clubs, balls, tees, and clothing by all the top names in the golfing world, and for both sexes … as currently, they have about 80 men and 20 lady members of the club … and if you need something specific they’ll be happy to find you just what you want and all at very good prices …
Club House
A well laid out clubhouse, inside its ‘major like’, with comfy seating and dining areas, outside; covered areas and plenty of alfresco dining, and a BBQ area … whilst behind the bar, all your favourite drinks at subsidised prices and catering can be arranged for birthday parties and special events … You’ll even find the occasional Awards Ceremonies, a Caribbean Night and Daishaw for the Nepalese Community, to mention but a few …
