I was invited by my very good friend Matty to do a catch-up at The Grand Slam, coz sooo much has changed in the past few years, including sadly losing his dad, and right-hand man, ‘Joe’. To be honest, this place is famous for its entertainment and there’s so much happening here, it’s going to be hard to cover it all …
Welsh Elvis?
I first met Matty, originally from Wales, in 1998, not long after his famous TV appearance with Michael Barrymore, when he came into our office for a life-size Elvis banner. At first, I thought, ‘Welsh Elvis?’, that’s novel … but wow! This guy’s tribute to the king is awesome, and he loves his Rock ‘&’ Roll and btw, he can even pull off Tom Jones to a tee !!!
3 Decades
In the early days Matty did the circuit, He told me ” I had shows in places like Bells Pub, Woody’s Inn, and I ran the entertainment and Karaoke at The Square Bar in Protaras for about 10 years” … and 27 years later he’s still doing it, but tbh, these days he’s running the pub and because he loves music, and a good night out, I’d say they’re leading the way in providing pub entertainment in the Kapparis area.
Boozer
The Grand Slam is a family-run British-style boozer, it’s even on the corner, on the sunny side of the road, and was once known as The Corner Pin. Inside it looks busy, with quirky little designs mostly mum ‘Gina’s’ doing, I just love the table tops they’re well cool but the Bar Tops top the charts … There’s music memorabilia all over the place with a professional light and sound system, a well stocked bar, with a lovely front terrace onto Kapparis Avenue … it’s a great stop off for an afternoon drink, excellentl pub grub, and there’s something happening here almost every night!
Menu
Let’ start with the munchies … What you’ll get here is really good pub grub at excellent value for money, and with Gina in the kitchen to make sure everything is served just the way you like it … oh, and everything is homemade … my faves here are the delicious Homemade Curries, and Gina’s homemade Pies, Burgers, Pizza, chicken, and Sunday Lunch Welsh Style … but her speciality is the homemade traditional cooking in particular the authentic Welsh Faggots … omg! just wait ’til you taste them …
Smashed It!
On a recent visit, Matty persuaded me to try their new Smash Burger, check out the pic in the gallery below, oh, and I gotta say it was delicious! … Next on my tick list are the Home Fried American Chicken, I’ve heard they’re better than in Kentucky …
Varied
The menu is varied so there’s something for everyone, and the kitchen stays open ’til late if you want a last-minute Takeaway … and hey, Matty sometimes goes in to help his mum, coz it often gets busy here … They are also happy to arrange buffets and catering for your wedding or special events …
Behind The Bar
Matty mentioned, “Sadly, we recently lost my dad, ‘Joe’, a huge part of the pub, but we’re determined to keep his legacy going!” … So, Matty and Gina are your hosts, and awesome hosts they are too. Serving all your favourite tipples with a selection of draught beers and ciders, all your favourite spirits, long drinks and classic cocktails. With a cool selection of bottled beers and John Smiths Ale and Strongbow Cider on draught and House Speciality Cocktails from only €4 … Matty told me, “keep your eyes open for our regular drinks offers” …
Entertainment
Now, this is where this place comes into its element, coz Matty is pure entertainment! There’s something happening almost every night, with regular live music, karaoke on Funtastic Fridays, discos, themed parties, especially for seasonal events like Valentine’s, Easter, Halloween, Bonfire Night, and Christmas & New Year … Oh, look out for their regular Showcases, they are always a sell-out with all the money going to the entertainers … Brilliant!
Sports & Quizzes
With big screen TV’s all over the place its a great place to watch all the live sports, naturally, with a tendency to lean towards the Rugby, coz the Welsh are rubbish at football lol … Matty also told me “we’ve recently become the home of local Rugby team ‘Paralimni Vipers” … oh, and on Wednesdays it’s ‘Wednesday Blues Buster’ with Sticky 13, and Bingo hosted by Andy and Rose with cash prizes … I love Wednesdays lol … but I love the rugby memerobillia more!
Disco Bingo
Another really cool idea, every Thursday is Music Bingo Quiz Night, same as bingo but you gotta know your music … hosted by the brilliant Lee Weller, and before and after there’s a little Karaoke, with big cash prizes and a Free Pool Table and Special Drinks Offers with a Meal Deal too … btw they also have a Pool and Darts Team for their winter leagues.
Kids Club
Becoming increasingly popular, every Tuesday from 4 pm, it’s time for Kid’s Club. With mum Gina in charge, coz mums do it best. The fun and games are non-stop, including Arts & Crafts workshops, free candy floss, free popcorn, free ice cream, kids karaoke and disco, plus meal deals and lots more and the smiles on all the kids’ faces are a credit to Gina and the team … Oh, and I love the cooking lessons by the wonderful Angie … and btw, it’s best to dress the kids in clothes you don’t mind a bit of paint on lol
Weekends
On Saturday & Sunday, you’ll always find the live sports plus, of course, more live music … I’m looking forward to catching Super Soul Sundays with the eminent Drew Chapman with occasional visits by the gorgeous Carmen from Barbados via Paphos 😉 … oh and amazingly talented Chris Andre is a regular on the stage!
New Gym
Matty is also getting into health and fitness, so he’s built a very well-equipped gym downstairs and told me “our clients are welcome to use it” …
Everyone is Welcome
