A Touch Above
About 5 years ago I found this really cool cafe at the top of Oroklini Village. It’s an awesome Sports Bar & Grill, officially the Alki FC Supporters Club, but really it’s more of a social club, coz all fans are welcome here, especially for the Premier League, and Champions League, and well, if it’s on, it’ll be on here … oh btw, just wait ’til you see the size of the Jumbo Rib Eye Beef Chop, it’s huge! and on that note, all the charcoal grills are to die for … it’s, without doubt, become one of my favourite traditional taverns in Larnaca!
Hospitality
Angelos, an avid sports fan, has been in hospitality since he left school, working in kitchens like Flambe Steak House and Nissi Plage Hotel in Ayia Napa, De Capilla Restaurant in Protaras and owned Bon Appetite Take Away down on the Dhekalia Road from 1998 to 2003.
On the Map
I asked Angelos why Alki? He said “I opened Alki Sports & Grill Bar in 2015 coz I wanted to add a nice little place to the Oroklini Map. A place with a cool atmosphere, to enjoy good food, but with big portions, served fresh from the Charcoal Grill, we’ll be hosting regular events and of course, we’re showing all the live sports on the 4 big screens”.
Traditional
The decor is traditional taverna style, inside it’s spacious, and comfy, with a lovely log burner for the chilly winter evenings and outside a covered courtyard for the balmy summer nights … across the road a run of tables alfresco style for those hot summer nights. Oh btw, I’m loving the new extended bar with RGB lights, looks well cool.
Just for You
Angelos told me he just loves to cook, putting his Diploma from The Hotel Catering College to good use. Choosing the best cuts and local produce, saying “We make everything by hand, even the Beef Burgers are an old family recipe, so too my fav the sheftalies” Omg! … but Angelos enjoys making a’la carte specialities with a passion, so you can ask him to cook whatever you fancy, maybe a Carbonara?, or if you give him enough notice, from what I’ve heard, he likes a challenge and he’s full of surprises.
Behind the Bar
Angelos looks after his clients, serving pretty much all your favourite drinks, by the glass, shot or by the bottle and on Happy Mondays he serves a pint of Draught Carlsberg for only €2 … hmm, you can’t beat that!!!
Menu
Specialising in traditional Cyprus Meze, it’s about 20 seasonal dishes, served nice and slowly, oh and you can bring any side dishes with you and he’ll cook them to your liking, saying that he’ll only serve something good enough for him and he’s a perfectionist in the kitchen! … They also have some traditional Cypriot cuisine, like the Fassolia aka White Beans, or Homemade Moussaka, his mum’s recipe, just delicious. Oh, and he makes a great English Breakfast, as big as you want.
Seafood
Angelos loves his seafood, so he buys yours fresh from a local fish market, always delicious Tsipoura, Whitebait and Sea Bream, but if you fancy something else just give him a day’s notice and he’ll get it in for you.
Parties
Angelos told me his crew are always happy to host charity events, birthday parties or in fact any special occasion, even a themed party, arranging all the catering for you, so if you fancy a set menu or buffet style all you have to do is choose the cuisines and dishes, even if it’s Indian or Chinese and let them surprise you!
Sports
Favouring Football and Basketball on the weekend they’ll put one Greek match on and one from the Premier League and the atmosphere in here is brilliant, and there’s a pool table to crack a few frames, oh and he often has a few munchies on the house for the footie fans … check out their reviews on Trip Advisor
Events
Alki is one of those places that attracts lots of nationalities, locals, British, and a mix of tourists from all over the place and every Thursday, Friday and Saturday there’s live Greek Music with the awesomely talented Savvas on guitar and Hara providing the vocals, playing a cool mix of ballads and a little rebetika… Check out some of their Videos
